Photographs & memories of the famous GLASGOW GREEN

Nelson's Monument
Nelson's monument standing 44 metres high.
This obelisk designed by the architect David Hamilton and built by the mason A. Brocket
was the first civic monument in Britain to commemorate Admiral Nelson's victories.

The money to build the monument was raised by public subscription and the foundation
stone was laid on Friday 1st August 1806.

On August 5th 1810, the monument was struck by lightning causing the top twenty feet to collapse to the ground, a company of soldiers were posted to keep the public safe until it was rebuilt.
