"........... pictures of my Da ( Jimmy Howe ) and his brothers, they
lived in the Gorbals.
Their mother died when my Da was about 5 years old,
before this photo was taken and
they had a real hard time being brought up.
This is a photo of my Da at his mother's (Betty Howe, nee McGuigan )
graveside in Riddrie cemetery, she died giving birth.
When my Da was 14 he went to
work on the shows in the Glasgow Green for the Cadonas. He left school and traveled
all over Scotland sleeping in the back of one of Cadonas lorries.for a few
years and then worked on the building sites.
In the early sixties a chain snapped on a bison beam being taken of a lorry
it fell on my Da and crushed his legs, he was off work for a year but my Ma
& Da struggled through. He trained as a joiner after that and went on to
fitting suspended ceilings.
He worked in Ireland during the troubles but jacked that in when the hotel
porter woke him up in the middle of the night and told him there was a bomb
outside the hotel when it went of it blew the hotel up.
In 2002 he died of
asbestosis the blight of the building trade.
He brought us all up well with
a good work ethic and helped make me my brother and sister what we are
today."
